How a single mookata outlet became Klang Valley's most accessible Thai buffet chain.
Zech Lim loves mookata. He also doesn't eat much. That contradiction is where Thai Geng started.
Every mookata place in Malaysia sold the same thing, large set portions packed with ingredients you may or may not actually want, priced for groups. Order one and you would either overpay or leave food on the grill. Both felt wrong.
The first Thai Geng opened in Bandar Bukit Raja, Klang in 2022 with a different model, à la carte mookata. Pick exactly what you want, in the portion you need. Pay for what you eat. Skip what you don't.
It solved a real problem. Customers walked in skeptical of mookata without a set menu and walked out telling friends about the place that finally let them eat the way they wanted to.
By 2024 the pattern was clear. Customers wanted both freedom and value. À la carte gave them control, but the per-item pricing capped how generously they could try new ingredients.
Thai Geng pivoted to all-you-can-eat buffet that year. Same founding idea, expanded freedom. One flat price, unlimited refills on any of the 50+ items, 120 minutes to eat. No menu math at the table. No worry about ordering too much.
The price had to land at a number that worked for the math and felt easy to say yes to. RM35.90 is that number for the 7 standard outlets. SS2 Petaling Jaya runs as the Signature flagship with four premium tiers from RM48.90 to RM88.90, where the top tier brings in wagyu beef and live seafood.
